There's no future without the past and anybody who doesn't really understand where jazz has come from has no right to try to direct where it's going.

I do not ordinarily make prophecies, but about this I am absolutely prophetic: the coming hundred years are going to be more and more irrational, and more and more mystical. The second thing: After a hundred years people will be perfectly able to understand why I was misunderstood ó because I am the beginning of the mystical, the irrational. I am a discontinuity with the past. The past cannot understand me; only the future will understand. The past can only condemn me. It cannot understand me, it cannot answer me, it cannot argue with me; it can only condemn me. Only the future Ö as man becomes more and more available to the mysterious, to the meaningless yet significant Ö After a hundred years they will understand. Because the more man becomes aware of the mysterious side of life, the less he is political; the less he is a Hindu, a Mohammedan, a Christian; the less is the possibility for his being a fanatic. A man in tune with the mysterious is humble, loving, caring, accepting the uniqueness of everybody. He is rejoicing in the freedom of each individual, because only with freedom can this garden of humanity be a rich place.

The past is not more important than the future, despite what your culture has taught you. Your future observations, conclusions, and beliefs are more important to you than those in your past ever will be. The world is changing so fast the balance between the past and the future has shifted.

Good jazz is when the leader jumps on the piano, waves his arms, and yells. Fine jazz is when a tenorman lifts his foot in the air. Great jazz is when he heaves a piercing note for 32 bars and collapses on his hands and knees. A pure genius of jazz is manifested when he and the rest of the orchestra run around the room while the rhythm section grimaces and dances around their instruments.

Charles Mingus

Listen to what the heart has to say. It is not going to run your life. The heart's message is so simple. It's not going to tell you that you should buy this color jacket, and this color car and this color house. Heart only has one thing to say to you, 'Be fulfilled.' This is all it ever has wanted, and this is the only demand the heart has for you. What have we done with ourselves? We have made ourselves slaves of the past and the future. Take away the future, which doesn't yet exist, and the past that has disappeared. Be fulfilled now, in this moment.

Maharaji (Prem Rawat)

I donít know why he said that. Maybe he wanted to be in the paper? Maybe he doesnít understand what I do? Itís bizarre to me that he says he doesnít know who I am because heís dressed me in the past. Iíve worn Karl Lagerfeld. Not even Chanelóhis line. Lagerfeld doesnít just send random things everywhere, so it was a big thing for me [to wear his label] to the CFDA Awards a few years ago. I donít know how he missed that, when he dressed me that time. But you know, itís cool. People can say whatever they want to say. You canít please everybody, and you canít live your life wanting to please everybody either.
