This is a dark painting with a bit of violence because I was very affected by Diana's death. I cried all day because I liked her, warts and all. Most of all I liked the way that she wanted to be loved and didn't mind admitting it.

It's back in the news now, the Princess Diana Memorial Fountain. People going, "Oh, it's great! It's what she would have wanted. It's a place where families can hang out, children can play. It’s what Princess Diana would have wanted." It isn't! What Princess Diana would have wanted would have been to have not been killed. And then in death, not to have become the unwitting receptacle of the hysterical overemotional shrieking grief of twats.

When Jackson talked about painting he didn’t usurp anything that wasn’t himself. He didn’t want to change anything, he wasn’t using any outworn attitude about it, he was always himself.
