My favourite painting is often the one or the collection that I am currently working on. This is probably due to the fact that I don’t yet know where it will take me.
Being born in New York City, tends to lead to big expectations, expectations that I only started to realize after I had left.
Although I do often find inspiration while looking through a camera lens, most of my paintings come as an afterthought back in my studio, while re-living the emotion and excitement of the trip itself.
Traveling sets me free and I find myself most alive when the culture shock I feel is strongest… Painting is the way I capture, savor and express all these feelings.
In 1995, when I was backpacking through Europe solo, I would head to the train station, look up at the big board, and decide right there and then where I would go that day.
While traveling, I’ve found that spontaneity keeps things fresh, while serendipity guides me through it all. There have been a lot of rough moments along the way, but they often bear the best memories.
All the possessions in the world cannot fill an empty heart with love.
I attempt to lead my viewers in the right direction about where I was, and what I was thinking or feeling at the time of creating a particular painting. Then, after giving this initial clue, it is my specific purpose to leave the viewers on their own to question how the title relates to the art itself and to decide how the artwork makes them feel in the context of my clues.
