Under that title Kawabata talked about a unique kind of mysticism which is found not only in Japanese thought but also more widely Oriental thought. By 'unique' I mean here a tendency towards Zen Buddhism. Even as a twentieth-century writer Kawabata depicts his state of mind in terms of the poems written by medieval Zen monks. Most of these poems are concerned with the linguistic impossibility of telling truth. According to such poems words are confined within their closed shells. The readers can not expect that words will ever come out of these poems and get through to us. One can never understand or feel sympathetic towards these Zen poems except by giving oneself up and willingly penetrating into the closed shells of those words.

I didn’t even know that there was art until I left Texas when I was eighteen. The only painting I knew (and I didn’t know it was a ‘painting’ until much later) was Hope, the woman sitting on the globe with.. ,that green you only get in reproductions! I think that negates the idea of a painter’s relation to official – old master art. It was neutral ground – that one picture – I responded to visual things.. ..Hope (the painter, fh) was just sort of visual thing there, not art.

I tend to keep books of art more than anything else now. I'm interested in visual things. And astronomy books. Things you can look at over and over and over again and see something new. ... My notions of God and the universe have always been too small. And limited by language. So now I'm looking at picture books. My children say I'm just beginning to enter my dotage: can't read, just looks at picture books.
