Willem de Kooning

In the days before de Kooning establishing himself formally as a painter, Willem de Kooning had a variety of experiences that helped him to define himself. His influences by friends and the times were surprising. Of the singular influences was his relationship to music: "In the early thirties,... de Kooning made one astonishing and symbolic purchase. Just when the Depression was destroying the livlihood of millions of people, including that of many artists, de Kooning bought the best and most expensive record player money could buy - a miraculous machine that could summon "God and all those angels up there." Called a Capehart high-fidelity system, it was one of the first to change records automatically. It cost then prodigious sum of $700, more than half of de Kooning's annual salary at A.S. Beck; he got an advance to pay for it. With this purchase, de Kooning announced that he would not use this money to make himself conventionally respectable, even during the hard, early years of the Depression. He did not buy a house or a car, get married, have a baby, or stash away money against hard times. Instead, he professed himself sublimely irresponsible, a man nourished by music rather than mundane realities. And yet, it was still music rather than art that prompted his expansive gesture, for he could not yet find a comparable fluency, vitality, or extravagance in art."

I wanted my work to be seen for free in a public space, I want to be up there with Pollock and de Kooning, one of the big boys.

"I'm not crossing over from anything. I think of it as pop music with different influences. "When I walk in the music store, [my] album is under classical/pop/easy listening. It's hard to say what genre it is. It's genreless. I try not to define what it is. I let the audience define it. Because for me, it's just me."

The final test of painting, theirs, mine, any other, is; does the painter’s emotion comes across?.. ..Procedure is the keyword.. ..The difference is that we (the Abstract expressionists, fh) don’t begin with a definite sense of procedure. It’s free association from the start to the finished state. The old idea was to make use of your talent. This, we feel, is often to take the line of least resistance.. ..painters like Rothko, Pollock, Still, perhaps in reaction to the tendency to analyze which has dominated painting from Seurat to Albers, associate with very little analysis. A new form of expressionism inevitably followed. With De Kooning the procedure is continual change, and the immediacy of the change. With Jackson, it’s the confidence you feel from the concentration of his energy in a given picture..’ (1958)

"I remember creating and experimenting with Klay Scott of Circle Of Dust, pre-Circle of Dust, in his basement with guitarist Billy Poulos. I remember thinking 'Wow! We really have something here.' We were making innovative electronic industrial-influenced music in 1991 which included Poulos' Cocteau Twins/The Cure-like guitar sound and my Proverbs-like poetry over Scott's dark Industrial soundscape. At that time, it was rare to have guitar in industrial music. My use of poetry and delivery was unique and there wasn't any Christian Industrial music. To tell you the truth, I have never heard anything like it since. We split as friends when Scott wanted to include more heavy metal in his music and sign with the Christian label REX Records as Circle Of Dust, and Poulos and I wanted us to get a secular record deal as relevant Christians with alternative music sort of like U2 did. I remember Billy 'The Toxic Banana' Poulos and I sitting in my apartment in those days when we first met and turning Klay Scott on to all kinds of electronic music including what are now some of his biggest influences like Skinny Puppy. Ironically, Klay Scott would later influence a lot of his influences back." Billy Lamont HM Magazine 2004 note: spelling and grammar changes were made and the quote was trimmed down

Q. [McCallum] … are there other economists who have had a really major influence on your thinking? A. [Melzer] Well I mentioned Hayek. There are two ways. One is because of my interest in political economy. The other way is that Hayek was a pioneer in the use of information in economics. One of the papers that Karl and I wrote together that I continue to like was a paper called "The Uses of Money". In that paper we tried to incorporate information and the cost of information to explain why people use money. One of Hayek's most basic ideas is that institutions are a way of reducing uncertainty. Man struggles to find institutional arrangements which on average make life a bit more predictable. Our "Uses of Money" is not so much about money as we conventionally think about it, it's about the idea of a medium of exchange, the function of an institution called the medium of exchange and how the medium of exchange as an institution resolves a part of peoples uncertainty about the future.
